Inherent existence refers to what has existed since beginningless kalpas, existing without cause or reason; that is, the seven great seeds within the Tathagatagarbha: earth, water, fire, wind, space, perception, and consciousness. These seeds neither arise nor cease. The inherently existing seven great seeds exist naturally without the fabrication of the five aggregates or the seven consciousnesses. There is no rationale to explain them, no dharma gives rise to them, and no dharma can extinguish them. They are pure and fundamental, manifesting throughout the Dharma Realm, untainted, unchanging, and eternally pure.
Newly perfumed refers to the seeds deposited by the karmic actions of the seven consciousnesses after the birth of the five aggregates, also known as karmic seeds. They are acquired after birth, subject to continuous birth, cessation, and change. Newly perfumed seeds are formed by the karmic actions fabricated by the five aggregates and seven consciousnesses in the conditioned realm. They are dharmas born from causes and conditions, categorized into wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral karmic seeds. When the seven consciousnesses become pure, the karmic actions they fabricate leave behind only pure karmic seeds. Once all unwholesome karmic seeds are eradicated, the Tathagatagarbha transforms consciousness into wisdom, accomplishing the Buddha Way.
The relationship between the inherent seeds and the newly perfumed seeds is that the inherent seeds manifest within the three realms, forming the five aggregates, seven consciousnesses, and all phenomena of the world. Utilizing the law of dependent origination, the seven consciousnesses fabricate karmic actions, and thus the seeds of these actions are deposited into the Tathagatagarbha. Without the inherent seeds, there would be no newly perfumed seeds acquired after birth. When doubts arise in the mind, clarifying the concepts within the question itself resolves half the issue. If the conceptual meaning is unclear, even if others provide answers, one remains easily confused. If concepts are unclear, the question itself becomes ambiguous and problematic, making it difficult for most people to answer properly. If individuals A, B, C, and D each hold different understandings of inherent and newly perfumed seeds, when debating together, when would they ever be able to unify their views and reach a consensus?
