How to Transform the Basis into Tathāgatagarbha?

Turning to rely on Tathagatagarbha means that all physical, verbal, and mental actions as well as the nature of the mind of the five aggregates must take refuge in Tathagatagarbha, resembling Tathagatagarbha, transforming the defiled, afflicted, and ignorant nature of the five aggregates into the pure and selfless nature of Tathagatagarbha. How is Tathagatagarbha pure? For example, Tathagatagarbha is free from afflictions such as greed; it does not crave wealth, sensual pleasures, fame, food, or sleep. It does not become covetous at the sight of money, nor does it scheme to earn, deceive, or extort money. The five aggregates and the seven consciousnesses should likewise be so. It remains unmoved by sensual forms, whether male or female, beautiful or ugly, like the wind passing through a flower grove without a single leaf clinging to it. The five aggregates should also be so.

It does not crave fame, seek reputation, enjoy the limelight, nor show off. It neither delights in flattery nor reverence, remaining obscure and unknown. The five aggregates should likewise be so. In daily life, Tathagatagarbha is neither extravagant nor attached to necessities such as food, drink, excretion, walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, and it uses them without attachment. The five aggregates should know contentment, avoid extravagance and waste, and refrain from comparison or ostentation. Tathagatagarbha never sleeps nor enjoys indulgence. The five aggregates should not crave comfortable sleep, pursue leisure and ease, but should abandon the cover of sleep. If unable to do so, one has not taken refuge in Tathagatagarbha, and even if one wishes to turn to rely on it, one will not succeed.
